I'd say the difficulty is going smoothly until like chapter 8/whatever the boat map was, and then it smooths out again until chapter 11 where there's endless reinforcements and all your army must make it to the top, wouldn't be so bad if there was a place for Augustus to buy better weapons/buy weapons at all... unless I missed that.
