So /gsg/, I've been thinking. Do you think that a player fits into one of the following four tiers when playing a game?
1. low confidence/low intelligence players (newlyweds) are intrigued by each of the mechanics instead of mind-flooded
2.) high confidence/low intelligence players (honeymooners) are able to formulate an initial meta-understanding of the mechanics and their functionality
3.) low confidence/high intelligence players (realists) realize failures in understanding or fail to realize failures and operate sub-proficiently, leading to “stagnation”
4.) high confidence/high intelligence players (experts) regain and restructure understanding of meta, and appreciate/utilize mechanics to desired result with competence
I mention this because I think that most of the reason the /gsg/ playerbase is "small" in comparison to other genres is primarily due to the mind-flooding that comes with looking at the GUI the first time ever looking in a pdx game. It is more complex than other games, undoubtedly.

No, they are correct, inasfar as I believe that a players intelligence (understanding of the game or maximal self-actualization within the game) is increasing, and the players confidence starts low, climbs, falls, and slowly rises. I think it is comparative to the knowledge/confidence graph of researchers in academic fields.

The definition for 2 suggests enough intelligence to form a basic understanding of the game while that for 3 suggests failure to understand and failure to understand what they are failing to understand

Yes, I did word that poorly.
What I mean by 2. is that the player can create a rudimentary understanding of the meta, albeit flawed and prone to problems which establish themselves in 3.
There, the player is having to reassess their meta understanding and reformulate continuously, e.g. learning that encouraging X, while useful, isn't as beneficial in the long term as encouraging Y.
The period in 3. is meant to represent the "getting things wrong more than you used to" which is actually just you correcting initial mistakes made during the second tier.

Yea, it would be near impossible for PDX to not fuck up the GUI, especially considering it is easier to fuck things up when reorganizing rather than improve them.

The mechanics have been simplified to the point of it not even being a challenge anymore. All the depth of a grand strategy game has been removed in an attempt to appeal to the mass market.

That's only a first degree approximation, it is better to take a look at all the games in the series and see if the derivative trend is greater space between games, or lesser space. If the development cycle looks like it has already passed, chances are they won't make a new Eu4.

It isn't the best game to be playing. The only reason to play HoI4 is to get a rudimentary understanding of how HoI3 will work. Hoi4 is a stepping stone.

Sisko would be better if Avery Brooks wasn't even more of a sperg than Shatner was. The man could not act to save his life, much as I love DS9--either that or he overacted a scene to the point that it was painful to watch. One of the best decisions the writers for DS9 made was to shift the focus away from Sisko to his supporting cast, because they were universally better actors than Brooks was.

It's a shame Voyager couldn't do the same thing with its cast, but excepting Tim Russ and Robert Picardo, all of Voyager's actors were worse than Mulgrew, and the writers just wrote Janeway into a brick fucking wall trying to compensate. Shame really, because she wasn't bad in her role at first, but a single actor can't carry a show like that.
