Ever since memevers it looks like FTB has been losing their apparent authority though. It's probably because they stopped being balance whores, or maybe because their official modpacks have been getting worse and worse as time goes on.

What would be a recomended simple tech mod?

I usually do not get into tech and the such. With the 1.7.10 pack I am setting up it is really just going to be for farming, setting up a nice house, and finally using Forestry, rail craft, and a few mods people mentioned.

While I would not say i want things to be "low tech" I really do not need much beyond basic machines to lower the amount of tedium I have to deal with.

Applied energistics 2 with a basic controller + crafting panel + ME Drive + storage cell

Grimoire of Gaia. It adds difficult mobs based on the biome, it works with BoP but I'd like something that doesn't slow my game to a crawl after 30 minutes.

i'm assuming you'll have to define each biome in the configs. I've got both those in my current pack so I'll mess around with them and see what I get.

DE is actually an okay mod, nothing as bad as people say or you might think. It also has the GOAT funtion of alloiwng you to place items on any surface.

some people hate how ME Drives can store gorillions of items and personally i find LP more involved, which is a plus for me(but others may prefer AE2's simpler system). That said in my current world i'm using mostly LP with 2 small ME systems for IC2 seeds & bulk storage of a few items(cobblestone and ~10 other items)

There are plenty of issues with TiCon, it adds a LOT of stuff that makes the game considerably easier.
-I'm not even going to get started on the tools/weapons
-Travellers gear, which is as strong as Diamond Armor, yet very cheap with great optional bonuses
-30(thirty) hearts of health, or 3x vanilla health, although obtaining it is admittedly somewhat involved
-Laggy casting basins+tables(github.com/SlimeKnights/TinkersConstruct/issues/1184)

Is it really? Last time I played with it it seemed to be only at leather or iron levels, and it actually lost defense as it ran out of durability, but that was way back in 1.6.

Install the very latest version of Forge, I think it's 1614. I used to have issues too until I did this. Don't forget to install the dependencies for your mods.

How do you handle control config when mods want to assign more keys than you have on your keyboard?

unassign all the keybinds, fuckers don't get any keys unless I actually need them.

If on 1.10+: just hold ctrl, shift or alt when pushing a key.
If on 1.7.10: unassign them and install MineMenu, then create an option in the radial menu for them.
