Nah, the vector set is basically just prettier, the cla critters are cleverer, but I'm not really into the tileset though the one it was based on is from the user with rthe huge single layer geometrical-and-color-coded-as-fuck forts.

I've tried it some. It's pretty cool and some of the races he's made up are really unique, but if I'm being honest, I just like having that mod user show up with the dog picture when people talk about him. It's cute.

I use ASCII normally but if I was going to use a tileset, I’d go with CLA.
I think it’s a nice ascii-like tileset for newcomers to the game, if the standard graphics are too intimidating.
I hate graphic packs with little sprites of dwarfs and furniture, I think it’s tacky.

I wanted to try and get used to vanilla, but the neon colours on a black background fucks with my epilepsy, especially when there's a lot of activity on screen. the softer colour palette is easier on my brain

Are there any unused ASCII symbols in the game?

I recommend “Lee’s color scheme” off of the wiki for the standard ascii. It takes the edge off of a lot of the eye-bleeding colors and you don’t end up with olive-green browns.
But if the flashing is the problem I think you’re out of luck

what font do you use?

A handful, I used a few of them for the key symbols and whatnot in my KSBD modset which I'll have to try to get working properly once some more of the bugfixes are done.

the squad needs to be set to active (well doesn't NEED to but it greatly helps), they can't be allowed to train at anything other than an archery target, and the targets zones cant overlap

Nothing wrong with tilesets, though ASCII has its own pleasant look too it, when using something other than the default color scheme.

Literally everyone uses a tileset. You just use the tileset that comes with the game.

Tileset is a weird word, it's meaning changes depending on the general, for example, in /rlg/ when someone mentions tilesets they usually refer to graphical tilesets, but here people use it to refer to both ASCII and graphical tilesets, I guess that would be the correct meaning too.

I have a pretty decent surplus of dogs in my fortress, so I wanted to bolster my military with wardogs. How long do they take to train? Can I assign multiple dogs to a single dwarf?

You can assign them with v-p-e, after they're done training - to do that you need a designated zone with animal training enabled. Doesn't take too long.

I've started playing Dwarf Fortress and I am awestruck. I am convinced that this video game is one of the Great accomplishments of humanity. This game is as technically impressive as some Classic literature or other artistic creations of the human race. The depth of this game is unfathomable. You could get lost playing this for a year and never leave your house. The creators of this game achieved self actualization. Why did I not play this game before? My military keeps becoming wrestlers instead of things like swordsdwarfs even though I manually assign them weapons and they are holding them in their inventory when they train, am i doing something wrong?

IIRC they train whatever skills they feel like training at a moment, not neccessarily their main weapon skill.

They just happen to have a higher skill in wrestling at the moment because they train all sorts of different skills, not just their weapon. Eventually they'll better with their weapons.

I don't think it's as good a litmus test as you think. I know several people who have been following this game since 2d and still use the word tileset in the more classic way that you seem to be allergic to.

Probably more than a few. In my adventurer's case its probably even worse, since she's fully immortal, due to getting some spell knowledge earlier - cannot die of starvation, dehydration, suffocation or old age. Even the kobs cannot reach her in here.
