if you cast superheat on a piece of iron ore in your inventory then tell your character to mine a piece of iron ore they will do it almost instantly

is there any way to replicate this with gold mining? it seems possible but insanely inconsistent

That is called tick manipulation, 3-tick mining

you are shortening the time it takes to mine the ore, normally it takes 3 ticks to mine an ore so you get it instantly, however if you don't get the ore that tick you get to roll getting the ore again every 5(?) ticks. Iron has a very high chance of being successful and rune has a very low chance, so it is much slower to mine.

Gold is somewhere in between so you can get it on the first roll or it could take 10 rolls to successfully mine the ore.

It is RNG that is why it is inconsistent.
