It's a damage type essentially. Hammers, hunting horns, SnS shield bashes, GS kick (I think) and shoulder tackle, lance shield charge, charge blade phials, bowgun melee attacks deal impact damage
There might be more, but you get the point
If you deal enough impact damage to a monster's head, it'll knock it out, which basically makes it fall down and squirm on the ground for free hits.
Some monsters also require impact damage to break parts, like Barroth's head crest.
Impact damage doesn't deal extra damage, so it's just a type of damage; for example, impact damage can't cut tails at all.
It can also cause exhaust on monsters, which you used to be able to see when you hit a monster with impact damage and it flinches and spit falls out of its mouth briefly. Deal enough exhaust damage and the monster will eventually get tired faster than normal.

Weapons definitely have good and bad matchups, but every MH also just has overpowered and underpowered weapons in general. Don't play MH if you're not okay with very poor balance.

Actually, yeah, it's the main reason why SnS kill speed is so much lower than every other weapon in the beta right now, even HH is faster than it because HH has the recital sound blasts.

Can't Barroth's head crest be removed with cutting damage? I thought that cutting removes any part type, but impact is limited (no tails).

Do slinger attacks do impact or cutting damage (are there options)? I plan on using IG with an impact bug for versatility, but the bug will be extremely slow for breaking parts by itself, won't it?

CB is a problem in its own right.

SnS is objectively massively disadvantaged compared to other weapons. If you don't let that stop you from using it, more power to you. But that doesn't make the weapon not weak.

Cutting can remove Barroth's crest, but you are massively dealing less damage with cutting so it takes forever, whereas blunt doesn't bounce at the same sharpness level/does +damage for blunt on that body part

You could be right, and I thought the same for a while too. I feel that at some point between Tri and World you could break it with cutting.
But in World, after tons of hunts it seems like it only broke when we had a hammer or HH guy going at it.
Gunlance shells definitely didn't seem to do it, but maybe I just wasn't going for it hard enough.

It's good in the beta, it'll be shit in the full game once endgame monsters with their higher power values on their attacks start requiring guard skills to block properly even with power guard.

Given how the skill system will work, I doubt that getting guard boost and guard will be hard.

To be honest the second tobi was confirmed to be thunder damage it was obvious it was going to be a pseudo-zinogre. It has more Narga map movement though.

If any of those things were actually all that useful, it would reflect in lower kill times. DPS isn't the only thing that influences those.
SnS's "advantages" in World are largely irrelevant. The weapon is disadvantaged because it's meant to be disadvantaged. They literally call it a "beginner weapon". It's not meant to be equal to the other weapons.

It's got a separate set of hit zone numbers, so depending on where you aim impact can do more or less damage than cut.

Those are still "wasted" skills that don't directly boost your damage output, so Lance is still at a disadvantage. Guard also requires 5 points to max out.
