Is ice better than shadow? Does it do more damage than shadow? I'm on my way to bt and vt raids and while doing that, I see more and more high geared warlocks that are ice and almost never shadow. Have I done a silly mistake by going for shadow? Are they much worse with bt/vt gear?

they swap places constantly, both specs are viable but in the end ice is better once you get vt gear
bt gear and before shadow is better assuming you have hm skills and badges

at bt gear - no shadow is better
at vt gear - ice is better
neither is unplayable at either point it's just meta shifts over time so ncsoft can make cash off fotm element swappers

play what you find fun, everything is capable enough at endgame you just might not be "the best" but you'll never be better than 20ms whales anyway

where is vortex temple and scion's keep? what are they exact locations and entry points? i cannot find them at all.

I'm coming back to the game after a long time not playing. I have no idea what I was doing or should be doing equipment-wise. I'm like lvl 42 and I think I just started act 4. Should I be keeping/upgrading the weapon/accessories I had or should I be getting new ones somewhere and abandoning this old stuff?

I read the new players thing in the OP. my current equipment was throwing me off from understanding it for a second, but I guess I just do the pirate dungeon for the accessories and then continue act 4 for a new weapon and thow what I have away?

Just do the story quests. They will prep you up and after that you can worry about the gear grind.
Don't throw your old accessories away. If you find better ones put the old ones in your vault.
You could also post your items/inventory so we know what you're dealing with.

how pay to win is this game? how fun is it? is it worth getting into / is it too late to play?

You can buy almost everything save for the actual gear needed to progress.
There's a small decrease in recovery time for people who spend currency
but its not relevant in PvP and nearly meaningless end-game.

The gameplay is fast but ping and fps sensitive, I find it fun and challenging,
but your mileage will vary depending on your patience and what you want.
If you want to participate in all the content at a mild pace, it's good.
If you want to put in neet hours for the best gear, it will get old fast.

Although bnsg is stagnating, the game is doing well enough,
content still rolls in, player base alive, it's not too late to jump in,
but you'll find polarizing opinions as to whether its worth it.

For whomever wondered sometime ago, killing the first miniboss in fallen aransu school definitely does not lock you into the instance, only the the thrall itself does.
