MTT thinks that was just really good acting, but Alphys explains that he's a robot. His soul and memories were created by her, even though she values him a lot as a friend.

From there, MTT basically is coming to terms with identity and such. In the end, he joins Napstablook in the grave-visiting, who fondly points out that they looks sort of like a family at that moment.

Huh. That's quite different from what I thought, but it's an interesting idea nonetheless. Thanks for clearing it up.
