Eggman rebuilt it to use as a moon base, in the Advance games. Even though Sonic destroyed Eggman's lunar operations, the rebuilt moon is still intact.

It's how it works in Sonic

Moon was broken in SA2 but we never see the broken side again. Iizuka says we're just seeing the other side. We also haven't seen humans besides Eggman in a long time. What if the humans live on one side of the planet and the animals live on the other?

Because Iizuka's answers regarding canon is 9 times out of 10 something he came up with off the top of his head because SEGA doesn't put a lot of thought in the Sonic world(s)?

How does that make sense?

Because the humans are either extremely generic, like the humans in the Adventure games and Unleashed, or are incredibly forced and tryhard, like the G.U.N. commander in Shadow or Princess Elise and the Duke of Soleanna in 06.

To be fair, Sonic's world can either mean the world Sonic comes from or just the two worlds, in general. It's used exchangably in the games.

My personal headcanon for what's going on with the Moon is that Sonic's world is actually hollow. SA2 and prior took place on the surface of the planet but after the moon got partially destroyed, the ocean tides got messed, there was mass flooding, etc. Sonic and friends retreated underground. The reason we don't seen any humans anymore is much like our own species on Earth, the humans refused to believe the planet was hollow. They died out. Simple as that. The animals sensed the impending doom and fled underground. That's why we see them and only them in Forces.

The moon we see in future titles is artificial. The sun we see is a natural inner sun.
