my game should be completed in 2024

>writing plot instead of working on graphics, maps, or code

I guess this counts as dev.

How many skills for each class are too little? I'm asking because I'm insecure about mines.

To give some context, there are only four party members (with their own classes, like FF1). But the skills are learned like in FF7, with materia.

i HATE FUNNY VIDEO GAMES

Yay, I get to talk about Knights of Pen and Paper again.

KoPP 2 has classes, and each has 4 skills. Some are passive, and some are worthless, so really you spend 6-10 hours spamming (and lightly upgrading) 2 useful skills per character. This is not enough.

FF1 puts new spells and equipment in every town. New town, new thing. Sense of progress.

Dragon Quest does it on level-up. You'll have to carefully balance your game so characters are getting useful spells not too often and not too little.

Make sure the player is excitied about new skills, and willing to try them out. If they get new ones before they're done playing with 'new' ones, you've put too many in.

>cannot decide between pixel art and just digital art for character portraits and enemies

Which one? In both cases the art won't have much shading but I'm better at just art. I'm also not trying to emulate the look of 8 and 16-bit games.

>I'm also not trying to emulate the look of 8 and 16-bit games.
Digital art, then. Having RETRO PIXELS in some places and regular art in others makes a game look unpolished.

No it doesn't.
Also, stop associating pixelart with being retro, that's a fallacy.

At that resolution, it may as well be traditional art.

thats nice art but wouldnt really count it as pixel art

That's just nonsense (anti-aliased art*).
Not all of the MS mobs I would consider true pixel-art because a lot of the newer than the really old ones have line-aliasing on them.
Do you consider the original Sonic to be pixelart?

Ar nosurge did have these moments, and you blasting the Talk Topics for them also having a role in the characters commenting on the events happening around them is idiotic considering all the Ar tonelico games had that same system and employed it that same way.

And from what you're saying, it's clear that you don't even know about Ciel nosurge's existence.

If the original asker is capable of making pixel art that good, then I don't think they'd be asking our opinion on portraits. I don't disagree with what you're saying, but it doesn't help answer their question.

I'm just saying it can be done smoothly, m8.
I wanted to name a different game but I can't remember it.

bump

Yes, I know what you're talking about. But I don't know how to make lots of skills without repeating the same thing over and over again but with a different element...

Oh boy, I get to teach you the old-fashoned way

Go to GameFAQS. Look up RPGs from the PS1/PS2 era. Any RPG worth damn has a fan-made 'Skill List' or similar FAQ that goes over each ability in the game and what it does. Sometimes, the writer will add their own flavor text about strategy and how to use it. I haven't been there in a while, but I can tell you off the top of my head that Final Fantasy Tactics, Disgaea, and Ragnarok Online had really good guides.

As someone struggling with the same thing, what I'd suggest is looking for games with a similar system to yours to get ideas. If you're using a unique combat system, there should be skills that involve that system. Even if you're not using a class system, I'd also advise trying to categorize skills by "classes". For me at least, it makes it easier to make new skills when I can say "Character X has Class Y, here's a new skill that fits them", instead of just trying to make a huge skill list right off the bat.

My europoor charts are going off the level

Ah you must be American. Did you save up your shart for the local Walmart today?

I wish I had a European man to bully me while dressed up like that one European guy in the black suit pls

really dumb question. I want to make a game with survival mechanics where your status deteriorates after walking a number of steps.

Do I have to do a ruby script or is there a way to do it with events, or should I even be asking here. Using VX Ace.

In the PS1 version, it could be done by giving the player an unsellable/undroppable item called 'steps,' and give the player one for every step taken. For a modern version, you could probably have a variable keep track of it

I live in a bad area in Coburg friend. Fags get brutalized

For the check itself, set two variables, one equal to Game Data > Other > Number of Steps and the other equal to the amount of steps you want.
With a common event, check whether the steps variable reaches the number variable.

When it does, lower another variable for the status, then increase the check variable by the same amount you initially set it to.

So I guess you'd need around three variables to do what you want, more if you need different statuses with different step thresholds.

>Steps Variable = Game Data > Other > Number of Steps
>Check Variable = Number of steps after which the status deteriorates (for example, 20)
>Status Variable = Number (for example, 100)

>Common Event = Checks if Steps Variable == Check Variable
>If true, Status Variable - 10 and Check Variable + 20

Hopefully it's clear enough.

>Tfw American
>Tfw don't know or care what country Coburg is

Isn't St. Petersburg in Russia?
So -burg must be Russian. He's a Russian.

Googled it, apparently it's a town in Germany.

Is that in Western or Eastern Russia?

>Ameriburger makes a complete fool of himself
It's like this shit writes itself

Personally I think Germany would have been better off in the northwest USA because bison burgers tastes better than beef burgers imo.

If dubs, I work on my game. If singles, I watch Ocean Eleven and Twelve tonight and maybe download some music.

Posting this underrated gem. This game is pretty popular in Japan but for some unknown reason it didn't get such attention on western civilization. This is the only RPG game that I enjoyed completing to the last, if you're fan of fantasy games that also have mature themes then you need at least give it a try. Awesome soundtrack, interesting story and characters, plus the battle system is unique and fun, expect some challenging but fair bosses.

It's in Berlin. I'm Coburg user

>OP doesn't include the game which was released on Steam

Rolling

Does your game feature gambling?

bump

no but my life does

No. But I do enjoy rpgs with casinos. I also like fishing mini games and selling my big catches.

I just remembered I wanted to try and build an event system that learns the directions of a maze through trial and error.

if you haven't been stockpiling a large number of shitposts about your game in an imgur album you aren't doing it right

Show me

Bump

not until we release the demo

>Check out RPG Maker games on Steam
>A lot of them only have a handful of reviews and most likely didn't sell well
What can I do to prevent this?

social networking

If you haven't listened to the podcast yet, the GLITCHED interviews are a good place to hear about that kind of stuff. They carefully managed their social media presence, interacted with fans, and scheduled a variety of updates (mostly eye-catching art) to build interest before their successful Kickstarter attempt.

Not here too.

Is japanese RPG Maker community much different from the western one?

>page 10

>cant make assets
>dont wanna use default chibi-sized characters

Do those have anything unique about them or are they just using default tilesets in a boring fantasy setting?

Are these threads always slow?

I want to add an option to order followers to wait
Is there a way to implement this beside "okay, I will wait for you at predetermined event spot"? That is, is it possible to dynamically spawn a new event on the current map to represent the follower that left party?

They are usually slower than the other generals, but I don't think they're ever this slow.
It is 10 AM in America though, which is where most of the traffic comes from, and people usually get on their PCs later in the afternoon.
Or at least that's my guess.

Uh, I wonder. It might be possible through events, but it sounds like quite a bit of work with variables and stuff.
It does sound interesting to make though.

A rough idea would be to make several events in a debug map with each follower's graphic, then have a specific button to bring up a choice to speak to the followers and choose which one to leave behind. Then get the player's coordinates in two variables and the direction they're facing in another variable, and based on the direction teleport the follower event to those coordinates after removing them from the party.

Which maker are you using, by the way?

the only thing i can think of is to create an event on every map that represents your party member and teleport it around when your party member needs to wait there.
You probably would need to make this partymember_wait event once and then copy paste it on every map

Alright then, I guess I'll need to do it manually for each map
How do I access the current map's id though? Doesn't seem that $dataMap has an id property

no

yes, daddy. YES!

Really nice advices. Thanks. I'll do that. Got any recommendations of games with interesting skills?

Pokemon for a start. You have some skills that go beyond the fire, fira, firaga formula.

And what formula is that?

Straight upgrades of earlier skills.

Final Fantasy adds suffixes to spells to show upgrades

Fire - Fira - Firaga

Thunder - Thundara - Thundaga

Kind of like Ember - Flamethrower
or Bubble - Bubblebeam in Pokemon

Should I really make custom assets? I just wanna design maps and shit. Are the DLC tilesets enough to set me apart?

Custom assets allow you to be more creative with your map designs since you aren't limited to what's already available.

bump

It does

>Are the DLC tilesets enough to set me apart?
No.
And they are pretty expensive as well.

Im using time fantasy its nice

New animation!

have we ever seen anything from the game itself?

No
Programmer finally got out of college tho,
so you should expect to soon

These are great, user.
And I'm not just saying that to give you a false sense of security and to bump this gen. I genuinely like them.

Why thank you, suspiciously-specific-denial user. I post updates for the game on tumblr.com/blog/mirroredsoulgame.

>Play game
>New pronouns like rhe, rer, rhim come up
Why is this even a thing?

What game even does that?

>his main character is male

ewwww are you a gay or something?

>he creates characters based on personal sexual arousal

>his main character is a black woman in a world of white male NPCs
Dick status>>> Erect = [100%]

bumb

Does your game feature a mad scientist?

It does!
Zurr (mini-boss of second kingdom)’s arc revolves around him setting up a false religion which is really just a cover-up for a scheme to get more funding for his mad creations.

Because it's either made by someone who likes that, or for an audience that does (there are definitely tumblrites who'd suck your dick just for including it).

Goddamn why is it so hard to draw people
I can easily create the maps, items, monsters, but when I have to draw a human its like I get polio or something and completely ruin the head and proportions

Because it's something both incredibly familiar and reasonably complex, meaning there's any number of things you can fuck up and your brain is very good at recognizing THAT you've fucked it up.

these looks nice
pixelart done right

Is there any decent stealth plugin that makes the event pause for a moment and look around before chasing the player?

I have tried the Yanfly one but it only makes the event chase and not look around before

Is there a definitive rpg maker? I have seen people preach for VX Ace and for MV.

Damn I am retarded I didn't mention my version, I use MV
