one cause for it is bad port forwarding on your router.
some routers/modems are completely fucked, it's always Technicolor modems. there are workarounds for some models and network setups.

This is false. I play both GG and Melee and get way better connections via Dolphin netplay with guys across the US (I'm Canadian), but can't even connect with guys in middle America in GG without bad lag and 2 bars.

I've even played a match with someone on basically the other side of the world in the UK and only had 150 ping, but I guess it really depends on how good your computer is.

for hopelessness its important to understand that you should play to improve and improvement takes a REALLY long time. just because you lose a couple matches now doesnt mean you're garbage, just keep practicing.
dealing with anger is harder, but its important to try and control it, so whenever you find yourself getting angry take a moment to breath or do whatever you do to relax before going into your next match.
