Not really, parry spamming is the best thing you can do, then when he wants to transform his weapon you can perma backstab him.

First playthrough, yeah. Things got easier as time went on. I remember having my ass handed to me by the locals in Central Yharnam, and now I can clear them systematically.
It was also my first From game, so Souls was much easier having been warmed up by BB.
