I don't get FTL. The game simply doesn't give enough resources to deal with both upgrades and repairs.

It's called managing your ressources, user. Dont fully repair your ship if you cant afford it. Track events that give you free or discount upgrades.

Lamia is a fun alternative to the Abomination, with a bit more support focus on normal form, and poison on monster form.
The Hood is a fun alternative to the Antiquarian. Increases food stack size, and has a bit of support and shuffle capabilities.
The Offering is a frontline support tank, but has rather weak offense

Those are just the ones I have installed.

Ah. Those beggars I think are completely different encounters. The random encounters spawn when you enter the map, then stay there even if you leave. I'm not sure about this, but I think they also disappear after a few hours if you don't interact with them, but it's possible that I just loaded a save before they spawned and forgot about it.

Don't repair to full unless you're at flagship already, or if you found a really good deal. Don't take too much damage in the first place, taking damage means losing money so managing resources is managing your hp too, there's that evade thing for it, before you get it shields are really strong and are usually your priority for spending resources since it's basically unlimited regenerating hp for most purposes. You'll get the hang of it when you'll become more familiar with events and upgrades/equipment so that you'll know what to go for.

Also the most basic and foolproof tactic is usually going for their guns so that they'll be taking damage while giving none in return, target shields if you don't have enough firepower to ignore them or tools to disable them. Not taking damage will play a great role into saving your money.

This sounds like /v/'s outrage right now. A previously "obscure" RPG Maker game is going to Steam and will be more accessible, therefore no more sekret club

I could understand if it were a multiplayer game or a game with an extensive modding community behind it. I will always remember how Amenisia's mods became a shitfest after PDP did his playthrough.
