Side characters don't need too much development though some idea of what they went on to do would have been nice.
Having five episodes wouldn't have changed much. I think they would have still waited until the very end to resolve things.
If I were in charge of the prequel, I would have had each episode take place one day over three years. Each day being from a different year.
That way you can track how things develop and show how they start to get close to S1.
I get what they were trying to do by showing how Chloe only met Rachel but they made things those first three days way too crazy and had no way to slow it down at the end.
