I'm about to do a third play through of the entire series with machine translation. I want to try learning a little bit of nip alongside it by trying to translate as I go. I know nothing right now! If I go slowly, line by line, and don't move on until I understand each line, will I learn enough nip to be able to play X with some knowledge attained this way + MTL?

If you put a lot of effort and focus exclusively on learning all the grammar, you'll probably be able to read X using Mecab and JParser. It will be slow but you'd probably understand most of the dialogue.

I do not know why ITHVNR + TA doesn't work in RQM for me. The translation is not simultaneous. when activated it only translates the first sentence then stop
