The short version, is it's been a really long, really rough road and he's just tired of cleaning up everyone else's shit. I haven't played it yet so I wouldn't know. But I still have nightmares from BYOND's shitty engine from way back when. So anything that doesn't take a second to respond to an action is good in my book.

Significant notes:

The players got mad because it affected gameplay. Specifically not-retarded ways to clean out your asshole. Not that most people bothered to save those people but charcoal was basically trash. The coders didn't have a problem with this because this concern wasn't something they knew. And it was something they weren't told about because there was a whole two hour window in which for that to happen after they agreed internally that there was no problem and should go forward when others wait weeks.

They were being niggers in the PR until cluster pulled it back to a constructive path and then later pjb realizes his foot's in an explosive bear trap and he needs to damage control hard or he's fucked.

He got mad at the self-merge because bauds was trying to do something about nex, pjb, and cluster being asshats who in turn started snapping at bauds bitching about the self-merge which all of them have done previously for things that aren't valid to self-merge.

If you were in the coder discord at the time you'd see the bauds joined for the first time in a year and started yelling at them NOT that the PR was wrong but instead that he thought that water+potass was not a bug but an intentional feature of the game. After a lot of disagreement he just stopped arguing and merged the revert PR by himself which lead to nex, clus, and pjb being furious that he just went around them after giving up on the argument.

In real life, elemental water and potassium will explode because water is extremely electronegative and potassium is on the left side of the periodic table. However in real life, elemental potassium doesn't exist in human bodies because its so reactive it exists in stable forms.

In game, there was a water and potassium reaction that caused an explosion. It cleared all the reagents from the container that it was held in (as part of the explosion probably). But people found out that putting water and potassium in humans cleared all the reagents out of their bodies too and started using that despite it making no actual real life sense. And people were willing to defend that exploit to the death because the chemical that is actually for that purpose and based on a real life chemical activated charcoal was pretty useless ingame.

Probably more appropriate to call it an oversight. Several reactions like EMP, water-potass and nitro explosions clear all reagents in the container they happen in. The point of this is to make it so you can't simply spam them by pouring 5u from one container into another. The side effect is humans are also containers and it lets you clear all poisons from a person instantly for essentially nothing, since water and potassium are directly available through one click from the chem dispenser and it causes no damage under a certain amount.

There were a couple bugs that could happen from this because it didn't call the on_removal() proc and could result in permanent sleep or slow in some cases. Using the reaction in that way wasn't "safe" for mobs but it might be now because of

This is indefensibly a bug. What people are aggravated about, is that with it gone ther's only charcoal which is hot garbage. One would think that'd be a hot button issue that'd be quickly fixed, but the general pool of relevant things this matters is dealing with an asshole that currently has 600 beer inside him, hideous amounts of mindbreaker, synaptazine, overdoses, and other slow acting poisons some of which aren't cleaned by antitoxin. God blunts were some of the biggest bad actors regarding cleanout crises. Charcoal was painfully slow and you had to either babysit them adding more often or you'd risk adding too much leaving you with a patient in the midst of liver failure that is currently resisting the lifesaving drugs you need to keep them from dying. Now normally, this is the part where your average person fails to give a single solitary shit about these idiots and their quest to kill themselves, but apparently charcoal also had a bunch of other hiccups that you'd learn about if you bothers to look it up or actually paid attention during treatment that furthered it being a piece of shit. Now allegedly, the coders had a little powwow over fixing the zombie powder bug by just lobbing the exploit out the window or something to that effect. They didn't know about this at all because coders don't play memes.
