Level deisng-wise Adventure 2 is pretty boring, but it has better controls, the best 3D Sonic controls in the series, at least in official games. Adventure 1 has decent controls and the best 3D level design in the series in the later Sonic stages.

Honest question. Does anyone know what a "mary sue" is anymore? Because I don't think I've seen it used in the right context in years.
Languages change and evolve over time. Mary Sue now means "Character I do not like" or "Character that shows up the character I like".

The term original came from a Star Trek TOS fanfic about the new ensign named Mary Sue. Basically she was perfect at everything, everyone loved her, and she had no flaws. I don't remember if she was an insert of the author or not though I wouldn't be surprised.
A Mary Sue is a female character that has little to no flaws, is very talented (often to ridiculous extremes), manages to overcome any dangers/obstacles with ease and is loved/respected by everyone around them.
The male version of this term is Gary Stu.

A self-insert CAN be a mary-sue but a self-insert by definition isn't one. A self-insert like Toribot isn't a Mary-Sue because all he does is highlight his own flaws.

I honestly HATE the term Gary-Stu. I've always just called ANY character that does this a "Mary-Sue". There's no need to make a male version of that name. Mary Sue is referencing a specific character that was created. Also Gary-Stu isn't a name. No man is named that. Just call them a Mary-Sue regardless.

This raises an interesting question I feel is worth exploring in-depth:
What contemporary 3D platformers can we fairly compare Adventure 1/2 to?
They're very nonstandard videogames, delivering unique, quirky if somewhat disjointed experiences. There's quotable lines, singable songs, the Chao garden, jiggle physics, they're antiquated and dated even on release but at the same time offer true innovation in the platforming genre. As if Sonic Team managed to create its own Blue Ocean of 3D platforming, only to eventually abandon for Boost.
Could they be kino? Would that label exempt them from critique and comparison?

Yeah. They're pretty special because they actually took risks. Lots of risks. Which is mostly fine, until the risk you take is releasing a prototype instead of a full game. Unleashed was the last time they tried to be ambitious, and I feel that even back then they tuned it down a bit to focus on polishing it a bit more (which isn't necessarily a bad thing since they exaggerated with 2006, but now they're in the complete opposite direction...)

Not if they can't do everything, that's an important part people forget.
They care enough so Sonic will keep on turning a profit. Most people that buy the games don't give a shit about plot, character development, canon, and all that other shit. But most of the people that buy the games also don't go online to discuss the series.

IDW likes the gays and aren't as shafted as Archie are, so I'm holding on hope that a bunch of tertiary characters can finally muff dive in canon.
Have we ever had a Sonic game with a properly "large-scale" narrative ala Xenoblade Chronicles? It doesn't seem like it's enough for it a plot to just involve the entire world, it has to be written so there's a real sense of cosmic stakes at work or some shit.

Quite frankly, if Unleashed arc was a game, that. Multiple storylinesall meshing towards one with side missions.
But Sonic is one of the few platformers that 2 hours of gameplay is apparently justified so gotta fill up that small amount of time with the laziest story ever wrote.
