but why would you want a fixed wing Tom Cat anyway ? it would looks pretty similar to the flanker from the layout of the wings, and you would save a bunch of weight with the swingwing mechanics removed ... but that would be countered by more fuel in the wing and the fuselage i guess ...

It just looks kinda weird is all. I mean, when I think of a variable geometry wing, the first thing I go to is the F-14.

Best part of Top Gun as a movie is the opening scene. Everything after that is bad to worse.

Honestly? All the air combat stuff isn't that great. It's poorly shot and constitutes a miniscule amount of the film compared to tom cruise creepily smiling at the female lead, shirtless men EMOTING at each other, and boring shit that isn't planes.

The only really poorly shot dogfight was the ending one that's mostly stock footage of the same Tomcat firing the same missile and the same F-5 model being blown up. But for a mainstream Hollywood flick its got a decent amount, and I give it points for not bitching out and doing the lame modern action movie thing of a super closeup shakycam mess to cover up the shitty action cheorography.
I mean, its certainly way better as a planefag movie than schlock like Final Countdown or Stealth.

Stealth's main problem was the fact that it abruptly changed genres halfway through.

It has been probably a year since I last saw Top Gun, but from what I remember most of the action footage is just reaction shots of the pilots with limited external shots.
