Moved it to a bone in the hand, hid it, made an animation with it set to active and it just doesn't appear. I'm probably overlooking something blatant but I still feel the after effects of last night a bit.

Shape keys are kinda like animation reference points. They allow the model to animate in certain ways. If you delete them you can expect whatever bone/mesh they're attached to won't be able to animate properly, so don't delete or mess with anything like your face, hands, or arms if you're planning on looking normal.

Things that are important. Play around with them; they move things. If you delete the ones on your face, your face is basically paralyzed forever. The "Basis" key isn't that important if its on its own but don't delete the face shape keys.

Nice. But whatever you do, please don't make it a regular public Youtube video.

It's time we all start downloading all the mmd models available and re upload them. Before more butthurt Japanese start pulling or deleting their accounts.
