There's nothing random in the game, you need to manage your health, keys, gold, SP, stats, etc. while trying to figure out an optimal route to progress which gives you the most powerups with the least health lost.

The keys are for unlocking the old characters, they give you powerups and can also party with you to use special skills, so they're a part of clearing the game.
I'm not sure if you get enough keys to unlock all of them, there are other H-scenes than the one through keys.

It is a tricky puzzle game with no randomness at all. It is all about finding the most efficient route through the levels end up as strong as possible. There is no way to grind or anything like that to improve stats.

There is some heart key thing related to h-scenes in this one only just started so not sure exactly how the mechanic will work. The first game is out and already translated in English would recommend it to anyone who hasn't played it.

Shop price scaling doesn't carry through stages anymore, and each stage has a maximum amount you can buy. It's a better idea to buy atleast some from each stage now.
