Abathur was not designed for combat, he was made for spinning new strains of zerg. He's always been fragile, though in SC lore he's actually the "head" for a much larger zerg than what we have in HotS.

Abathur, when he actually needs to fight, is good at fighting zerg. He is awful at fighting anything but zerg, because he knows all of the zerg biochemistry and can quite literally tear them apart at the genetic level.
Even then he cannot match a broodmother in combat, at the very least he is not considered a threat to Zagara even if he were to become hostile.
