Is Anja too bad? The shot types are a dream come true for a returning 4U player but that -20 affinity and High Deviation are making me worry.

I ran Anja in LR with no trouble at all. You can also use Bowgun mods to compsneate for statistical deficiency.

Been using bow since the beginning of the game and decided to try out use SnS for the first time ever, against Nergi and I enjoyed it
Took me longer to kill him but the fight just felt so safe and comfy? Never felt like I was in any danger, can easily superman away from his dive too compared to bow which if you're in roar range when he targets you with the dive you're getting hit.
I think I'll stick with bow for flyers and stuff with hard to reach weak zones (anjanath) and go SnS for anything low.

Both Anjanath bowguns can't use slicing which means they're not worth using.

Slicing, Cluster, wyvernfire and the special ammo's are the only damage dealing ammo's worth using for both bowguns.
