It's good for any attack that causes you to reel. I'm sure you've had some attacks you try to counter but it hits hard enough that it causes you to slide back or stumble a bit without countering. It's good for those attacks so you won't waste any time reeling and needing to reposition. Just plant and be ready to keep on attacking once the attack is over. I guess if you have enough points in guard though it wouldn't matter much.

Also holy tittyfucking christ I didn't even think of using it to extend a mistimed counter. That's the best thing I've ever heard. Thank you.

True, attacking after a power guard with a direction allows you to attack in any direction. Remember this if you're fighting a monster that has a ramming ability like Bazel or Nerg, because then you can use that after they've run over you to attack them from behind

I'm enjoying the Rath set, with elemental lances, weakness exploit, critical eye and guard.

You can do that or just go attack plus or whatever, who gives a shit, the lance is a super comfy weapon, it doesn't really need any skills to be effective.
