Hell there are characters who didn't even exist in the novel and they show up in several battles in past games. There's 2 characters that are unrelated to the romance of the three kingdoms at all and are made up and they still manage to be a thing (Guan Suo and Bao)

In RoTK he shows up for when Cao Ren attacks Liu Bei at Xinye, switches sides during the invasion proper after Liu Biao's death and is outsmarted by Zhuge Liang, and in some games he shows up at Chibi to be totally ok with letting Pang Tong trick Cao Cao as long as he escapes the fire.
