I can only speak for my local environment where I've been into gold since 2006 or so
I've bought and sold several items in person from/to individuals and every time the items came with original invoices thus tracing them to their original purchases - produced either by myself or by the counterparty
Before pulling the trigger on a particular purchase I've always contacted the broker of the issuer mint and ran it through their stolen S/N database to confirm it was legit

so why buy on ebay where you can be scammed because "bought as seen" or "I never wrote in the desctiption that it's legit" when you can buy it from a trustworthy source that will be held responsible if anything is wrong with your order?

indeed it's not hard to test non invasively. routine procedure you could say most gold merchants offer a free check to a certain number of bars per customer.

so if i was buying anything from ebay you can bet i would have it checked the next day after delivery. i would video the unboxing too. after it turned out to be a fake i would report it to ebay and i would have my money back faster than you can blink. if ebay felt sluggish i would just charge back on the cc. one way or an other you would be out for as much as the fake cost you and a lawsuit.

Anyone buying gold usually goes through a reputable middleman/escrow who knows how to check for this sort of thing.
