This monster is a mess. If I didn't know better, I'd think its horns were weakspots. I see orange numbers far more often than bounces when my weapon passes through its horn.

You can follow Temp Kirin around for most of the quest, collecting his footprints to trigger temp ED investigations after you beat him.
If you get a temp Kushala you can do that too, and nergigante drops a lot of footprints, so you can kinda do the same thing, using the ghillie mantle.
Other than that, yes, you have to find their tempered tracks.

what weapon, armor and armor skills should I have? bombardier is a given

For spread shots, pay close attention to both clip size and recoil when choosing which LBG to craft.
Recoil locks you down after each shot, which is death if you're close enough for spreads to do full damage. A lot of bowguns can technically carry 2 and 3 tier ammo, but only like 2 shots before needing to reload. Avoid those, since they kill your damage output and, obviously, you don't want to be forced to frequently enter a reload animation while near your target.

For best results with spread shots, make sure spread 1,2,3 are the only ammo types equipped. Carry more berries and gunpowder to craft replenishments on the fly. You unload your 3s, then instead of reloading, switch to your 2s and unload, and repeat. When every clip is dry, you back off and reload.

Diablos specifically has an decreased elemental resist cap compared to most monsters and the wings take significantly more damage from bullet type damage.
