If you have no seasonal items unlocked during an event and you spend $80 on lootboxes you're guaranteed to get pretty much everything now, along with a fuckload of currency. $60 if you're lucky and potentially less if you're REALLY lucky and already own a good chunk of seasonal items. Buying lootboxes isn't actually a bad thing these days, because ever since they reworked lootboxes back in the day to have an extremely low chance of granting duplicates, every box you open makes your drop table smaller. Seriously, take it from someone who's spent close to $300 on lootboxes so far. Never bought lootboxes until after the rework happened though. You have a way higher chance of getting a legendary skin, a legendary currency drop or even the exact thing you want compared to getting any duplicate ever. After you've unlocked all the seasonal icons, sprays and most of the voice lines, duplicates become rather common from seasonal lootboxes due to them having one guaranteed seasonal drop. So after a while seasonal lootboxes become a consistent source of currency. Duplicate player icons are worth like what, 15? And lootboxes have a fairly high chance to give currency drops these days compared to back in the day where even getting 50 currency from a box was rare.
tl;dr Lootboxes get more value based on how long you've played and how much money you've spent, because duplicates have an extremely low drop rate (actually lower than everything else) and dupes only become common when you have almost every item in a category unlocked. Pic related, I literally never get dupes unless it's from a seasonal box and only if I have almost every seasonal item unlocked. Right now I have almost every non-seasonal item unlocked so lunar boxes usually give me 3 or 4 lunar items. Most of the missing unlocks here are seasonal crap.
