Guard doesn't completely nullify skills like Heavy Blade/Steady Breath/Bold Fighter/Vengeful Fighter, it just cancels out one of the CDs. So if you attack into Tharja with Guard she'll still gain 1 CD when she attacks.

One main issue with horses these days is that they lack good lance cavalry or axe cavalry options.

They have great offensive (CYRoy, Siegbert, even Eliwood for a budget option) and defensive (Sigurd, >Xander for a budget option) sword cavalry, but have only one decent lance cavalry (Camus) and zero decent axe cavalry (Frederick is the best one somehow?)

So horses are mostly pushed into a player phase role with ranged and fragile units, with only a few being able to turn the tables around. That's fine, when you're able to 1RKO enemies.

The issue is that there are several units for which 1RKOs are very difficult for horses to achieve. I know horseshitters may be too dumb to handle Myrrh on enemy phase, but she is a good example of a unit that completely laughs off the primary strength of horse teams (since only a fully buffed red bladetome deals with her in terms of mounted ranged units, and not many people have access to a red mage cavalry). Other such examples include Micaiah (fully buffed green mage cavalry with a blade tome can handle her, but outside of that your only option is to tank her with Sigurd if you have him) and sufficiently built up dragons. And that requires using bladetomes, which are incredibly position focused and buff-reliant to work. God help you if panic ploys get in the way.

And trenches completely fuck over the mobility advantage of horses to such a degree that they fall behind even armor or infantry sometimes in that regard, so that argument is gone

The good horses are still great units on their own terms, but in contrast to the absurd love the other unit types have gotten over the last few months, horses have been mostly ignored and neglected and it is really showing.

They're not bad, but they're no longer top; I would actually rank them at the bottom of the totem pole now given how absurd fliers, and armors are, and infantry have dancers and dragons to pull them up. Horses don't.
