Orange player here, this is a lie. 90% of my wins have come down to the fact people just flat out refuse to stop dragon dashing. Conversely, the 10% that doesnt apply to also don't realise 2H isn't their only button and getting it baited out is just as easy.

Can you punish an overhead with a down heavy mid-string or should I just block it and keep waiting for the other dude to fuck up?

It varies from character to character depending on frame data, but in all honesty it isn't reliable. If you can react to the actual overhead, doing a level 1 or 3 super is a good idea since it gets them off, but you'd need to input it quickly or you'd just get stuffed.

Backdashing also works at times, but overhead is incredibly safe on whiff and you'd probably both recover at the same time.

Reflect is also good but chances are they'd just spam their auto string afterwards and keep sliding towards you anyway.

I find it extremely hard to punish stuff in this game, everything seems safe.

I'm kind of a slow learner too so it took me 30 ranked losses to figure that I should not press buttons while veing comboed ever. Being old sucks.

its definitely hard to whiff punish in this game. im starting to get the impression that trying to reset to neutral might be the best thing to go for in most cases.

No bother. Should probably correct what i said about overheads, they're NOT safe on whiff at all, but in the situation where you backdash on reaction, you'll recover at the same time.

This is a game of wait your turn, especially when you're in the corner, it's best to just assume almost everything is safe on block except for a few normals and a good amount of specials. Teleport and dragon dash for example are safe on block, overhead is safe on block, most lights are safe etc. and a lot of unsafe things can be cancelled into something safer such as teleport or dragon dash, giving you a lot of pressure if the opponent doesnt react to it.

I've won a lot of games by super dashing in, back dashing, and then punishing the 2H they've been conditioned to throw out after a blocked super dash. Though anyone who is competent will wise up to this

not getting hit is the best strategy. do not block, do not get stuck in blockstun. you will get hit and you will lose. theyll get huge meter just hitting you and calling assists and doing endless blockstring and youll get hit eventually or dragon rushed or whatever. neutral is staying away until you can convert off a beam or stray assist hit or something and then going in ham with the sliding knockdown to pressure. resetting to neutral is the worst thing in this game as you may not have better neutral character on point at the time. you want to roll over them and force them to block nonstop (most just get hit).

This is my main gripe with auto combos. You can just spam L and hope he comes to you in different mixup situations. Like I would try to neutral jump heavy in the corner and I still get fucked by his whiffs at times.

Have you guys ever had matches that were so good and so close that you could actually feel yourself becoming better at the game throughout? I literally just had a bo3 with a yellow square (I'm light green) who won convincingly at first, but as I learned from my mistakes throughout I just about squeezed a victory in the second match and then won convincingly myself the third.

5H is not punishable on block as it can be cancelled to 5S > 214S, which is +4. Super Dash doesnt beat this either.

this is a huge deal in a game with so many tech options and it makes his setplay the best in the game by a lot

this only connects in the corner, otherwise you have to use the forward version that's 0

also you can literally just mash superdash during his entire string, you'll superdash after blocking the 5S (which is a ki blast with a super obvious animation and slower than normal startup) and beat out either version of 214 as well as pretty much anything he does that doesn't require so big of a delay that you can just stop mashing superdash because you're no longer in blockstun

shit, you can VERY easily superdash on REACTION from the 5S if he tries to do 214S or a bunch of other things, and while the timing is tighter you can do it for the faster 236S too

ki blasts are wack as fuck in this game because you can just superdash/deflect out of blockstun when they do them. outside of counterpokes, combo tools, or when backed up by something that makes it so doing those two options is not as good (gokus that do jumpin -> js -> quick ground buttons, or stuff backed by an assist) is a horrible idea.

you're talking about his 236 right? you know that you can just 4S6 OS to blow up pretty much any of his attempts at setplay right? the only thing that doesn't stop this is if he goes for a grab but then you just upback

majin buu's stuff is way more real, as are characters like 18 who can just stay on you forever no matter where you tech

also, unlike lvl 1s, you can't react to lvl 3s post flash unless you're half screen away or something (obviously char specific)
i was thinking of vanish, which is invincible on frame 3, it's good vs non airtight setups which are common considering almost nothing gives you a hard knockdown

close gaps with 5M/5H
can 214S on block to reset to avoid being punished
get good at parrying(5S or J. S) - you can parry everything except supers and throws, if you parry from in the air you will just teleport behind them, but I think they can still mash, you can only follow up a parry with a vanish or super unless they hit the wall - but if you get good at parrying then your opponent is gonna give you a lot more respect in neutral which will allow you, in turn, to mix them up with assists and 236M > M

you can also mixup with 236S > L or 236S > M

his super are really fast and at least the beam one is full screen, if not all of them and they beat pretty much anything

the most important part to playing him is getting good at parrying though

I just did it out of pretty much the exact same setup as trunks, I thought super dash had the same hurtbox for everyone but who knows

you can still use the blockstun of the 5S to deflect out of guardstun on reaction to 236S

I just want the online to not be shit. I want to be able to create ring lobbies and join them. I want to not take 15 minutes to find a match. I want to not to be dropped out of games mid match.

i've come to the conclusion that goku blue is way better than regular goku. if you want a beam assist just play black, goku blue assist is actually really good in its own niche

Maybe set number of normals beforehand pushes you too far back for Super Dash to reach in time/236S startsup? Like if you do 5M > 5H > 5S > 236S, it might not push you far enough back and your super dash hits, but few lights or 5M > 2M might push you far enough back that you dont reach in time? I'm not sure. Didnt try with other characters. Everyone has gotten counter hit when I end blockstring and they mash or dash at me with 16 in this manner. 236L hard knockdown into 214S is hilarious in how many it blows up. Either they just get hit or they mash after a hugely plus move. When I have time later, I'll see if I can bust through the blockstring with Trunks or others or if number of blocked hits/distance matters.

Im disappointed how samey every is. The only interesting ones are hit, beerus, ginyu/nappa, and a16. Where is the arcsy style characters like sin, elphelt, venom, ino, johhny, and other interesting mechanics?

Goku is one of the best characters in the game and better than Black. It's not even close. Goku is literally the best character at holding off/stalling out a lvl 3 Sparking to end matches. Black is a better point character than Goku, but most arent running him as point.

I think he refers to this post It was on purpose to have a lot of samey characters and have some with different styles, because they want newcomers to appreciate the game and to learn how to dive into unorthodox(?) fighting styles. And also give regulars some character diversity.
It was made to make the most people happy with the characters, and I'd say they did.

how does this make him better at "holding off/stalling a level 3 sparking blast"? Most of your points are about combos and being able to beam in the air is a little pointless given that if you get read they'll just sparking vanish behind you and gank your ass.

a better 2M is nice, but doesn't black still have the overall advantage here (espeicaly vs sparking blast) because he has fat H normals to keep them safely at a distance? air 236L is very handy but blacks equivalent (236H) gives you tons of corner carry, so in a game where you're drowning in meter spending that bar seems like a trade off at worst

I'm also not spending any meter because of said dropped combos. Fuck this is frustrating when you know you are better but you aren't playing like it.

Hell, I started playing Ginyu for his summon mechanic, but kept playing him because he's such a caring leader!

It's still a meme though, because one wrong move and you're ded. But play your moves well and your opponent will be so salty that the planet's salt level will be doubled.

Those characters have a barrier of entry though. Black has a skill floor below sea level.
