Some cameras and image software won't actually rotate a photo by shifting the pixels around, but will instead set an EXIF tag to indicate that the photo was taken in a different orientation. Proper image display software will recognize this tag and display the orientation correctly. However, Veeky Forums strips all EXIF data on images uploaded (except on I think), leaving the image in its original, unrotated state.
