I've been trying out the R-3R and it's not as bad as people say it is if you wait until you're inside kill range.
R-3Rs + R-60Ms seem like the way to go.

Also one thing I've been doing which has helped a lot is launching in pairs of R-3Rs and R-13M1s
They usually dodge one or the other, but not both.

This is what soviet pilots used to do because all of their missiles were so shit that it was a 50-50 chance that they wouldn't launch to begin with.

ACG Cold War is unironically better than 90% of the servers out there because it keeps FC3 planes out aside from the frogfoot.
The game improves DRASTICALLY when people aren't playing BVR Dodgeball. It also requires people to know a mix of both BVR tactics and BFM tactics in order to survive and not get ambushed by a three flight of F-5Es.

Against humans, they barely even take time to dodge so usually just one missile does the trick. I use it against AI because they'll pull 15Gs to get away from my missiles.

Just completed my first full flight, 26 minutes from Sochi to Gudauta, without any incidents except I fucked up when I was approaching the airfield and almost crash landed on a nearby field, but I managed to recover . The landing was probably terrible and considering how fast I was descending to the ground I was sure I'd explode and die, but the Huey survived.

If by yaw you meant pitch (i.e. pulled the stick back), what probably happened is that your rate of descent was too high as you bled speed and you entered Vortex Ring State (VRS). Basically what happened is you sunk into your own down draft and your rotor started recycling its own air rather than creating a positive air pressure beneath the disk. This results in a large loss of lift and no amount of raising collective will fix it (increasing the blade pitch basically just cycles more air faster). The way to correct it is to fly (in any direction, although ideally forward) out of the vortex and into clean air. You need enough height to do it though, so be extra careful to avoid VRS when landing or otherwise close to the ground.

VRS only occurs when two conditions are met.
1. Your airspeed is low enough.
2. When your descent rate is high enough.
It occurs when both conditions exist simultaneously. In other words, you can descend as fast as you want, or fly as slow as you want, but never at the same time. I forget the numbers though, so you'll have to look them up.
If you are slowing down, always watch your descent rate.

I meant using the tail rotor like you use the rudder in a plane, I didn't touch the roll axis except to make small adjustments

Not sure why you'd yaw to slow down, but the advice still applies; too slow while descending too fast equals VRS. Where you descending at the time before you dropped out of the sky?

I bought the mi-8 in the sale. At the moment I'm just learning and practicing the start-up sequence on the ground and it's one of the comfiest aircraft in DCS right now imo.
