Dumb question, but what is really needed before you can start installing mods in Skyrim? I wanted to try a mod that adds exposure and starvation, but it doesn't work and apparently I need another mod to make that mod work.

Nope. Just Skyrim. Not even sure if it's the Special Edition or the vanilla one. Can't check right now since it's another computer, but I have bad memories of modding the Elder Scrolls games, even with the considerably simplified Steam Workshop.

Avoid workshop mods, they have a small maximum file size so mod makers either dont release to it or they have to cut content.

Get yourself skse (script extender, its on steam) and in the future you launch the game by starting skse.

use mod manager or nexus mod manager to install your mods, use loot to determine load order. check out wrye bash and tes5edit too because you're gonna need them at some point if you're going for 100+ mods.

I've just started messing around with it so I cant speak about its stability.
2 issues I've found so far:

-told a guild member to follow me like a follower but he got lost in the woods and hasn't returned yet.( filthy skooma dealing argonian took all my bear meat with him )

- recruiting somone who is already your follower, or using a different mod like AFT to make a guild member your follower can cause them to lose their name and you cant interact with them.

But its comfy having a few guys hanging out at my base, they idle around and you can give them missions.

It is a joy to watch your partner get rammed by another and enjoy it more than you.
