There's no secret, it's absolute dogshit with a controller. I use M&KB for it (mostly play with controller on PC) and it makes it way easier.
You're a freak of nature user, the lock doesn't rotate intuitively so you don't expect it when it actually does start to rotate.
Not him but the best way to describe it is "dead zone". The controller sometimes simply will not continue to rotate the lock while you hold the pin, and it will force and break the lock.

since im aware how buggy this game is, i have to check. i broke into the monastery to find the necronomicon for the haunting quest. i got into the library and there was an empty book there with the prompt `start transcribing`. upon activating i have to read latin and write it down on the empty pages, and a cutscene triggers. is this supposed to happen later during the main quest maybe? i wanna reload right now cause im not sure ill fuck something up.
