It honestly doesn't look terrible or anything. Havent had a chance to try the demo myself, but does it do anything to break from the touhou formula?

The flow is similar with boss phases and stages but it plays quite differently. For example:
> no POC
> no grazing
> no bomb supply
> point items charges mana bar, which works quite like CCWI break bar. When more than half full you can bomb, with the full bar you can enter break / hyper mode. Faster you collect the item, more mana you get.
> Killing enemies with hyper will make them drop gold medals with high score values. Killing boss phases with hyper gives small gold medal per bullet cleared on the screen.

The overall tempo is faster on this game compared to touhou. You also need to move a lot if you want to get score. The bomb / break system is also faster compared to CCWI. It's quite hard to explain. Try the demo yourself.

I am not entirely sure, but one of the replays says "recorded at AEX Cup 2007", so I assumed it was live.

I'm pretty sure AEX Cup 2007 or whatshisface was an online competition where you submitted replays/scores, like STGT.

Played a bit Strania today. It's a fun game, but I dislike the weapon switching in it.

It seems to be something only Casper does. Curiously, in the manga bit, Windia seems to just suddenly have hers out of nowhere when she doesn't seem to have been carrying it previously. It makes me think that the girls can possibly just summon their weapons magically whenever they want to and dispel them when they're done, like Sora and the Keyblade in Kingdom Hearts.
