I enjoyed the event, but I do feel like at some point cygames forgot this is supposed to be the story of Gran and Lyria's adventures through the sky, and decided what we actually need is lots of gay angels.

You have some good points, but I do think that part 2 falls into the sequel problem that seems so common these days. You get a movie, or a game, or some other kind of story, it's good, it's successful, and it's a self contained story.

Then because of the success sequels get made, and it's especially common in movie trilogies but often the second seems to do nothing but meander and set up for the third entry, which to me at least often makes the second feel weaker than the first in spite of whether I enjoyed it or not.

Yeah, that about crystallizes my feelings about the event. It feels like at some point they reacted to the criticism of "Gran and Djeeta are flat self inserts with no characterization" with "Well that being the case, lets focus on other characters completely!"

Lyria is deeply boring and Gran is faceless and generally mute. The game is way too old to be correcting those fundamental problems.

At this point I just see Gran/DJ as Mad Max style characters, they're just gateways into the universe for us to follow, they're ultimately unimportant.

Belial was entertaining. Beelzebub was not, we had barely any time to learn anything about him and they're definitely aiming to drop most of his exposition in part 3.

Everything revolves AROUND you, you just stand there and look how all the people you attracted do shit for you. It's great being a singularity, you don't have to do shit, you just "stab the creature" at the end and take all the credit.

But Max is 10x more interesting than Gran. The problem is that Gran and Djeeta are uninteresting BY the standards of self insert blank slates. The whole point of blank slates is to allow you to define their nature, but gbf makes this worse by not even bothering to develop that nature. Blank slates that never change or develop are literally pointless.
The old "farmboy with no real past who discovers magic sword" high fantasy trope does not end with the farm boy still being a farm boy who has no skills or personality.

Gran actually has an appearance and occasionally gets to perform some kind of action in various scenes. That's better than many.

Yeah the biggest flaw with the event is it's not a very good anniversary event. If it was in a different month then I'd be more satisfied with it in that respect. Plus it's purely for Sandalphon and setup for 3 as you said. Whether or not it delivers on it we'll have to wait a year to see

Anyone else think Cygames wasted Lucifer's potential by offing him so quickly? He barely shows up in the end of the first anniversary and the second anniversary event rolls around and he's already dead, in a rather anti-climatic manner. It would have been nice to have at least one event where he could show off some of the extent of his abilities and personality. It would have made his death a little more meaningful to players.

That's what the main story is for, and even there it's more about everyone else than it is Gran/DJ. You only occasionally get any input on what to say and it never changes anything. You're just there to clear mobs.

Thats the main reason this event is so shit. It could have been "okay" if it didn't off such a major character for no particular reason. I don't even like him in Granblue much at all, but it's still bullshit. It would be like killing off one of the core crew members for no payoff.
