I'm imagining I saw a setting somewhere that would determine how colonists react to being attacked - flee, fight etc.

Was I dreaming because I can't find it anywhere now, not even on the wiki.

I'm playing vanilla btw, should probably have mentioned that.

When you click a colonist, you can see a picture of running stickman on the bottom left which indicates the colonist will flee if being attacked. You can click on it to either not react at all or fight back.

any tip what's the best choice to deal with those damn predatory animals during the winter? flee? they're only a problem when one of my colonists wanders away from base to pick up cargo pods or something and is suddenly dead without even a fight.

It looks that way indeed, but for the first time trying it out I was quite surprised with the amount of content it had. Really scratched the itch.
