You use his self focus evade to eat a ST NP. Even if the evade doesn't proc, you at least make sure it doesn't hit anyone important. Plus his Clairvoyance upgrade he get's is decent.

he's a halfway support halfway tank for an arts team.
his clairvoyance is one of the best teamwide buffs in the game for an arts crit team, and arts assasins/archers/lancers/sabers make extreme use of it. Kiritsugu, shiki, hfh, arjuna, emiya/chloe, lancelot, li shuwen will shit out stars and nps with that buff which has a 50% uptime (even more if you have a tamamo NPing).
he also falls into a debuff immmunity gimmick like a few select arts servants that can cheese bosses. he's one of three arts lancers in the game in JP and that's including benkei who's literally never going to be used by anyone.
he's also pretty tanky and his taunt evade is useful for bosses with ST NPs if you invest in it.
