I haven't played the game since mid-2016, reinstalling so I can show off to a girl who likes to talk about it. What are the biggest chances that have happened/what should I expect?

At bronze only (and silver maybe), you can carry yourself out with DPS. Pick Soldier or Tracer and decimate the enemy squishies. If you can't do that, you really belong in bronze until you can get your mechanical skill up (aim, strafing, escape plan, juking). Gamesense and positioning only really come into play around high Gold/Plat (and even then, /owg/ will disagree with me and say even Diamonds don't have sense) doesn't mean anything. I only played D.Va, Lucio, Mercy, Zen, Zarya on my main account (level 300 or so), and bought a new account to try DPS heroes out at a fresh rank. By the time I hit level 15 I wasn't getting matched with bronzes or silvers in QP anymore, the game detected my smurf account and started pairing me with plats and diamonds again, lowest were golds, so MMR definitely takes your mechanical skill into consideration first. If you're getting placed in bronze, it's because of your consistently poor accuracy, critical accuracy, on-fire time, and death count.

If you have people on your team communicating, it should be even easier for you. Tell them when you're going in, as in, "I'm going to go in in 4, 3, 2, 1, now", then "focus x/y/z shoot x/y/z go go let's go", "Zarya combo your ult with me" (when you're Tracer/Reaper/Junk/D.Va), "Zen get ready to use Trans when Genji dashes up into the air", "ZEN NOW NOW", etc. At Bronze, you're mainly going to use others as meatshields since they definitely can't aim, but it's good to get team coordination practice in when you can, since good communicators are very rare. Despite what they'll say, there's a great deal of mechanical skill overlap in gold/plat/low-diamond. The major differences between that tier of player are positioning, coordination, sense/prediction, and soft-skill management techniques in communication. There are Hanzos and Soldiers and McCrees that can land headshots at a decent frequency, but they fight 10 metres in front of your Rein shield and will blame your healers.
