I wanted to do everything as Vert and just have 3 guys as ranged dps. I tried Gear,Uni and Ram but they don't want to stay safely far away.

You do know you can order them, right?

Yes, you can change their balance of offense/defense and rate of SP use. Not melee/ vs. range afaik. And if I tell them to stay safe then they don't do any damage.

This is probably why the getting all skills for all neps achievement is so rare.
