Play Rook, use the MP5 w/acog and lurk around whatever you're defending. As you get more used to the game and learn maps you'll feel better about roaming and get a sense of how you want to go about each room on each map.
When I'm attacking I generally break and enter above the objective or on the opposite side of the map (depending on how many defenders are roaming where) and make my way to the objective. Make sure to always drone out a room before you enter and don't always scan enemy's when you see them.
If they're close enough to notice the glowing charm you probably have other things to worry about.
Try to take out as many grunts as you can stealthily
Set up defenses BEFORE the siege
Doc is a must pick
As Doc, save 1 stim pistol for yourself, one is for a DBNO team mate
Glaz is good for special infected
Smoke is good for keeping infected off objectives
Buck is decent all around, but is jack of all trades; master at none
Tachanka is good for sieges, but weaker on the move
Ash can help kill special infected EASILY
Abuse resupplies before moving to a new location
Ping targets, especially special infected
