For a time the explanation was just he had special shoes, then they dropped that.
They're kinda smart to ignore the question entirely.

He's fast because Maria's wandering soul flew into and combined with him because she thought he was Shadow. This gave him the power to control Chaos energy and since he loved running so much it granted him super speed.

I can't wait for Shadow to lose 1500 and for all the Shadowfags to have wasted their time holding out for their "special" milestone.

Nah you're right. Spindash made things too easy and convenient. Notice that a 3D game hasnt had it in years and nobody misses it.
