4 tiles is the standard, beyond that and they can charge and tricky pen you while you're typing. Automatically assume everyone has a pen, stun talisman or god forbid, cyanide hypospray

It's great for that too; it was originally crafted the minimum distance you have to stand away from a Vampire or Changeling while shooting it to death (or attempting to shoot at it in general) without being within the range for their various ranged stun attacks that they can activate whilst stunned (Ranged stings reach 3 tiles, Vamp eyeflashes reach 3 tiles)
Having a conversation with someone when there's a bunch of Changelings running around is the worst shit because in order to actually have enough time to react to someone who starts running toward you mid conversation with Changelings about, you basically have to stand at the edge of their LoS because of the 3 tile ranged deathsting. I once hailed someone in the hallways with Changelings on the loose almost certain that he was a Changeling, and mid-conversation, he ran at me without warning and the moment he did that I got deathstung by a Changeling wearing a cloak of invisibility. I really shoulda just gunned him down when I got patched up by medbay even though he turned out to be innocent.
Forgot to add: The true Powerful Gay Men tactic is to stand right in your suspects face with 0 tiles between you so if you get Eyeflashed or Lingstung you can logout of the bad game mode
