Shields never took off with Nips the way they did in western Eurasia/Africa so they're not considered staple parts of a warriors armaments - particularly in action media, which favours offensive/evasive acts for the wow factor generally.
They did use them at various points but the sort of highly personal shields we're used to are basically absent for most pf their history and rarely worked well with their typical armaments.
Fuck you, sword & board is only defeated by axe & shield, two-handed warhammers, and spears in terms of melee coolness.
