I think I gotta agree with here. Not only for the fact of the names sounding very Japanese but also the fact the highschool they go to is very different from any highschool I went to. Although granted I live in Walmartland, and the ghetto region at that, so I might be an outlier here. All I know is my highschool never required school uniforms and the only thing that could have come close to a "festival" was a school carnival that got shut down early because a bunch of ghetto black kids got in a massive brawl.

I remember someone throwing an idea around back saying that they lived in the middle some kind of Japanese-immigrant-majority neighborhood that manages their private schools like they would in Japan. The far likelier explanation is that what Monika says in the space room is correct, and the setting of DDLC is some kind of weird Japan-like land that is not actually Japan, but somewhat there.

It's set in fictionland, where it looks and acts japanese but they have saturdays off, the signs are in english, pinkeye is a cute character palette and not a disease and only four or five places actually exist.
