I thought I was decent at this game because I thought the chalice dungeons weren't too bad because I was running them at BL 140 like the guidebook suggested, but now there's barely any co-op or invasions

Is there a reason for the 43 character? I know 98 is so you don't match up with 120s

You can still match with 120s at 98 if you invade or co-op, it's mainly for avoiding 150s all together. 43 can invade 30s which is the minimum level that can be invaded (sub-30s can get invaded if they ring their Sinister Bell, but most players won't at those levels)
It’s mostly because 30 is when you start being able to get invaded, and 43 is the highest that can invade 30s, so 43 is used as the twink level. But for me it was more just about completing everything in the game at a lower level in an effort to git gud

There's no level requirement, but it is endgame content. I'd recommend BL80-98, I usually clear it after Micolash so I have a +10 weapon

i use the fist of gratia with mine, and just shoot eyeball rockets instead for ranged attacks, or tentacles for parrying

If you're BB is already up to date then yes, you're good to go. Buying it on the PS store just "unlocks" the DLC.
