Huh.

I now have 8 days and 2 hours in training mode so that's 194 hours in training and I haven't really fooled around with other characters there after I settled on Venom.
10 hours in Missions, 26 in Combos.
I think I have around 60 in misc stuff so I guess about 250 spent fighting online.

I haven't been able to pull out the slimiest setups from my bag of bullshit because I mess up the timings or something when I get a chance and you just jump out but I'll get there.

I played this game for a while before DBFZ came out , and I'm thinking about spending some more time with it now that the hype has died down and I need a non-tag fighter to also enjoy.

The first character I picked up was Faust, and he was pretty cool, but I was wondering if any of you guys had suggestions on who to pick up if I want to play someone a little more defensive and/or orthodox.

I can't pull up the hours right now but I'd say I have around 30 hours in lab, and 1k+ matches
Most of my lab time were learning how to do combos when starting out, then I just spent the rest of that time trying to perfect it online. I still lab to check if certain things work or practice a combo that I might be messing up more than I should.

I think the characters that don't mind a bit of distance to the opponent and have things to do when they're not in the opponents face could be called at least somewhat defensive. Faust is a good choice with his long normals and items.
Axl has huge reach and most Axl's I see play a more reserved game, stopping jump-ins and getting a couple of hits in wherever they can. He has a dp and it's annoying.
Jack-O isn't really an orthodox character and she revolves around getting her Ghosts up to lvl 3 and has a field that blocks every single thing even resembling a projectile so she can choose to play more defensively if she doesn't need to protect her houses. She also has a dp but I'm not sure how good it is.
Venom can play the zoning and keep-away game and has good and long normals. He has to play somewhat reserved at times just so that he can get some balls out but he really needs to get in there to be able to win reliably. I'm not sure but I think that's what Dizzy is about as well. Can't really call them orthodox, though.
If you're not into Jack-O, Venom or Dizzy, go with Faust or Axl. Look into Ky as well, he's about as orthodox as you can get and is decent at everything.

I feel like Axl's a bad choice for an "orthodox" character just because his normals take a lot of getting used to in my opinion. I played him for quite a while and sometimes in a panic I'd still use his 5P or 2P like they were a quick jab, which'll get you killed.

It's not very good AND it costs meter

Command grabs are typically throw invul during startup/ first active frame.

Dude. Thank you so much for the in-depth answer. Jack-O always looked really fucking cool to me, but I don't think my game IQ is nearly high enough to manage all of her shit and play fundamentals, too.

I think I've narrowed it down to Venom or Axl. Dizzy looks fun, too. Can't wait to try them out.

I think he's more or less conventional even if you have to use specific buttons in close range. Most of the characters I mentioned have relatively uncommon character-specific gimmicks vs some of Axl's buttons are slower.

Pot is a great character if you want someone more defensive. You will be on defense almost the entire match. Hell, it will rarely even be your turn to press buttons.

Faust is a good start for that. As far as more defensive characters go, you'll want someone with normals with some reach to them. Some people have mentioned Axl but he's not really "orthodox".
Is probably a better post to explain it than I could ever give, but if you want someone that plays defensively but then goes in to do big boy damage, Sol is meant to be played defensively at the start of a round (I play him much more offensively though), Sin is another good choice due to his midrange reach and the fact that his normals can all do huge damage and chain into each other. Playing with self control would probably make Sin a viable defense option on top of all his stuff being really basic and simple to understand.

Play anyone you think is the coolest; you have to do some practicing to get competent with any character you might choose and really liking your character helps. Keep at it. You can compensate the lack of IQ with hours, that's what I do.
For, example, I had a really rough time when I started with Venom and I only recently started to feel somewhat competent but there's nothing like the rush you get when everything just lines up and and you're able to do something you've worked on in practice. Makes it all worth it.

So burned out...I'd drop the game but that'd just make me play worse and lead to more frustration.

Play when you feel like it instead of as much as you can

Losing after not playing much is natural. Take a break and come back when you feel like playing. Or don't, nobody's forcing you.

Dizzy's 10 years old but is physically and mentally in her mid 20s. She'll probably stay that way forever now. Sin is 6 years old but he's physically 16, his retardation is his own thing though.

Simple inputs but a very unconventional playstyle. You need to learn to play with a completely different mentality from any other fighting game character but if you can manage that go ahead.
