Other world

If we were ever found by another sentient species, would humanity have the same fate as the natives of America did when europeans arrive?

Theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking in 2010 warned that humans should not try to contact alien life forms. He warned that aliens might pillage Earth for resources. "If aliens visit us, the outcome would be much as when Columbus landed in America, which didn't turn out well for the Native Americans", he said.[173] Jared Diamond has expressed similar concerns.[174]

no doubt the anglo would immediately side with them

No, we would pose no threat to aliens with the technology necessary for interstellar travel, and it's hard to imagine earth having resources that aliens haven't already acquired elsewhere.

The idea of dangerous aliens also ignores the fact that it would take an immensely "sensitive" and "cooperative" species to develop the technology for interstellar travel. So it's hard to believe aliens would look at us enemies or competitors, given we're still stuck on earth. More likely they would look at us as animals, resources, or an "undiscovered tribe."

this desu

Get ready to get civilized

They could find mineral resources anywhere, true, but habitable planets are a resource in themselves.
There would also be biological products of interest to them, for medical, engineering or culinary pursuits.
> fact that it would take an immensely "sensitive" and "cooperative" species to develop the technology for interstellar travel
Look at our history, and where/when the biggest technological advances have come from. Theres no reason to think they'd be sensitive to us or cooperative with us.

Depends on what kind of Ayys will find us.

We could find star trek tier PRIME DIRECTIVE ayys, or Spess Genghiz Khans.

Or Ayys whose lifeform is extremely alien to ours, it hurts both their heads and our heads to think of each other, and the latter goes their merry way.

>If we were ever found by another sentient species, would humanity have the same fate as the natives of America did when europeans arrive?
D-does this mean some of them will rape us?

I am ready, desu.

>ignores the fact that it would take an immensely "sensitive" and "cooperative" species to develop the technology for interstellar travel.

This is some seriously delusional Reddit-tier thinking.

Do you also think the creation of nuclear weapons also requires a "sensitive" species?

lel

Makes me think of that one short story with the aliens invading earth but using muskets

they could get sensitive and cooperative with our leaders.

ready or not here we go

why couldn't people draw in them days? it's basically stick men

There've been plenty that could draw with more realism but some chose not to

>They could find mineral resources anywhere, true, but habitable planets are a resource in themselves.
if life exists on other planets their evolution was shaped by that planet, just as our evolution was shaped by Earth. It seems doubtful to me that they would find our planet readily habitable.

kekkerino

>Alien race has the capability of intergalactic space travel
>Needs our resources

Any species that has advanced far enough to develop interstellar technology would also have had to face existential threats from advanced weaponry like nukes. If they managed to survive long enough to be able to travel to Earth without first wiping themselves out, there's a good chance they won't be dirty selfish primate scum like us.

I'm pretty sure it would play out a lot like this:

Kek. But to be fair, in that story, the aliens could just set a collision course for earth, drop a 100 ton weight out of their ship, and then change to an orbit course.
>catastrophic meteor impact on earth.
Repeat until mankind surrenders.

There's a reason why we search for water when we search for alien life. The hydrocarbons upon which life is based are basically unique chemically, and require water and oxygen. There has never been a chemical arrangement discovered that exhibited the same potential for life as the hydrocarbons from which we are comprised.

So chances are that a planet rich in oxygen and water would be a good prize for just about any alien race.

But isn't that a bit of a circular argument? Wouldn't a planet comprised of different (perhaps hitherto unknown) elements that also supported lifeforms do it with chemicals that aren't water and oxygen.
Why does life have to be LIFE like it is here.

The laws of physics being what they are, there's a limited range of chemicals than can support organic chemistry, or even something similar to organic chemistry.
Think of it this way: gold and noble gases are largely inert (very few chemical reactions will occur with them), so if you had a planet made of solid gold with an atmosphere made of noble gasses then no form of life could hypothetically appear there. It's an absurd example, but that's the general idea behind why we look for planets with very specific features.

>(perhaps hitherto unknown) elements
Nah.

Of course, spacial diseases would be even worst

This.
Something I never see addressed in any sort of Sci fi but would be a huge problem is disease. Using the Columbus example, he was even from the same planet and still rocked the new world with infectious disease.
Our bodies are covered in bacteria that help us function but are completely suited to life on earth. So if we were to go to another earth like planet, thered be no way to tell at first if the local bacteria (on the planet and inhabitants) posted a significant threat to us. And if it did, the whole planet or species would be toxic to us. The same would be true of aliens visiting us, we could harbor disease they've never encountered and start a pandemic.
I've read that the distant future probably won't be like Star Trek (for many reasons), with suitless humans interacting freely with aliens and alien worlds. Which is kinda a shame

war of the worlds?

>the same fate as the natives of America did when europeans arrive?

To get special treatment and reproduce to greater numbers than before colonisation?

Opposite of truth troll strikes again!

Would an advanced alien civilization civilization have multiple languages and "ethnicities" and perhaps even their own form of "racism"? Or would they have reached a stage where they would have a galactic-wide collective culture and identity akin to globalism?

well i'm guessing there will be genetic difference, who knows whether they're narrowed minded enough to argue about it.

nuclear weapons would probably be difficult to develop without cooperation for just about any concievable species.

>To get special treatment and reproduce to greater numbers than before colonisation?
after having your entire civilization effectively wiped out and being forced to live on reservations where you become highly addicted to alien drugs your body has no natural resistances to
also we'll run some sickass casinos

except thats incredibly unlikely. even on earth, we share a collossal amount of dna with every other species on the planet and yet there are many diseases that cant cross species. as such its entirely plausible to assume that alien bacteria wouldnt give us so much as a second glance.
