In dota support is someone who can die all the time to provide vision and gives up all of his farm and xp to the carry, being extremely underleveled and useless except for giving one skill.
In lol a support gains enough levels and even enough gold with right item to be able to wreck havoc depending on the type of support you picked.
AP support can be even top damage dealer (like Brand, was pretty popular 2 seasons before), tank support has tons of CC and is basically immortal and healslut will heal and annoy people for days.
Oh and dying here as a support is still a really bad thing unlike in dota.

you aren't expected to spend 90% of your meager income on wards and let your carry get all the experience in lane. they also have supports that do damage with farm AND supports that can do well with zero farm, rather than just the latter.
the only thing lol lacks in comparison to dotards 2 supports is good support active items like force staff and euls etc.
