Actually in many situations it's better to use Zed ult after your combo. If the enemy mid has good CC they can use that right after he ults to fuck Zed up. You use your combo like usual and then ult as soon as they try and CC you to dodge it.

Doesn't mean the guy in your scenario isn't utter garbage though
