Ancient platonists such as Plutarch and Proclus thought that Atlantis was a myth.
Most modern believers get their idea of Atlantis, not from Plato, but from occult writers such Madame Blavatsky.
There are other myths in Plato that don't get the same following, such as a city in the sky etc.

The Sea Peoples travelled throughout the Med attacking everyone as the Atlanteans are said to have done, notably the involvement of Egypt is mentioned whom were the only civilization left unscathed. The Sea Peoples likely originated to the west of Greece in Sardinia and other places, perhaps giving the impression they came through the "Gates of Hercules", ie. the Gibraltar Strait.
Minoan civilization collapsed after the Santorini eruption. Santorini was the location of a resort for the rich, Akrotiri, which has beeen discovered and yielded many artifacts and possibly hot and cold running water, also described as something Atlantis had.

Atlantis was dated by Plato to 9000 years before his time, ~9400 BC, this predates the date of the biblical flood estimated to have occurred at around ~2300 BC according to the Bible. It is unlikely these are literal truth, more likely they are embellished myths.
